19. Mongor

The nemesis of this episode is a schythe-weilding goat dude. I kid you not. We see him at the start of the ep, destroying a building amid flames and cackling laughter. He is Mongor, and he has an annoying way of repeating stuff just like those irksome Berzerkers. Mumm-Ra is taking note of all this o'course, and helpfully explains to the viewer that Mongor feeds on fear. The mummy hopes that Mongor will reap enough fear to be strong enough to go up against the ThunderCats.

At the Lair, the 'cats are trying to figure out why all their equipment is acting up. The Thunderkittens rush home and look mighty guilty about something. They sheepishly admit that they are the reason that things are amiss. Panthro laughs off the notion at first, but as the kittens begin to explain what they'd done, the adults begin chastising the junior duo for doing the same stupid thing those Balkan idiots did in "Ghost Warrior", dammit. Ok, so they didn't make the reference, but they did yell at the kids pretty good. While Snarf was chastising the adults for chastising the kittens, Kit and Kat sneak off. Racing on their spaceboards, they are headed for the Ruin Temple to try to find a way to undo what they had done...which was to accidently release Mongor from his tomb. Nevermind that Mumm-Ra claimed to have searched for three centuries for Mongor's prison. Forget dark, evil magic...all you need to find a needle in a haystack is two little brats with too much time on their hands and not enough supervision. That's just gotta chap the evil one's bandaged bum.

The ThunderCats go out to find the kittens, which means they're going to split up for expediency's sake. Tygra is the first to fall victim to Mongor. Try as Tiggie might to whip the total crap outta the little goat dude, Mongor turns his weapon against him easily enough. And grows bigger in stature for it. He moves on to Cheetara, trapping her in a net.

The kittens are back in the Temple, feverishly trying to decipher the ancient inscriptions on Mongor's crypt. They decide that the hieroglyphic-type pictures reveal the secret to defeating Mongor is not to look at him while reflecting his power back at him.

Meanwhile, Mongor is kicking Panthro's butt, even though the tough old panther is giving his all with both the 'tank and the chucks. In the end, Panthro is trapped by the spikes on his shoulder straps. Lion-O, on the other hand, is using the Sword's Second Sight powers to find the kittens, but Mongor is blocking the Sword's vision. Mongor attacks, and Lion-O decides to call his friends...but they've been pre-disposed of...all except those pestiferous Thunderkittens. The kittens race to his aid on their boards, and shout what they learned while Lion-O battles with Mongor.

Lion-O turns his back to Mongor, and uses the clawshield's reflective surface to get a line on Mongor...who is oddly distracted by the lamest of the lame pellet defenses of the kittens'; little bubbles that shot tiny rays...truly bizarre. Yes, I'm taking away my son's bubble magic wand. Yeesh. As Mongor weakens from Lion-O's assault and the fact that he cannot feed on Lion-O's fear, the other Tcats are freed from their bonds. Lion-O vanquishes the evil goat man with a shameful dollup of smarmy speech. Mumm-Ra is bummed that Mongor was defeated, even admitting that the ThunderCats are the greatest power he's ever faced. But, he defiantly decrees that his evil will overcome their strength. Guess he figures he's immuned to being smarmed to death...too bad nobody warned Mongor.
