UK Issued Marvel Comics

Below you'll find images and summaries of the UK versions of the old comic series for ThunderCats, which ran in the 80s. There are 129 issues in all; this page covers issues 1-12.
This section is complete in offering issues to download in pdf format. Enjoy.

#1 SIEGE IN SILVER AND STONE PART 1

ThunderCats UK Star Comics Issue #1 Cover
Download the entire issue in pdf format. File size is 3.7MB.
Issued 21 March 1987
Written by David Micheline. Art by Mooney, Breeding & Yomtov

Although this merely reprints the events of the US Star comic #3 (See below for recap of that synopsis), it does open with a few pages introducing the ThunderCats and their struggle against the Mutants and Mumm-Ra.

The summary is from Axelle's Cats Corner website.

This issue puts the spotlight on Panthro. He's out looking for Thundrillium when he unexpectedly has to come to the aid of a young Warrior Maiden, Tessa. He rescues her, but not without getting trapped in a cave with the ThunderTank too low on power to help them get out.
Meanwhile, Lion-O is warned by the Sword of Omens about Panthro's troubles and in a rash decision, rushes off to help by himself. Unfortunately, he runs into his own troubles - Panthro and Tessa end up solving their problem without the young Lord's help.
Panthro escorts Tessa back to the Tree Top Kingdom and is revered by the women for his bravery. Elsewhere, Lion-O is having a discussion with Jaga's ghost when the wise one inexplicably disappears in a flash or red light...

Issued 28 March 1987
Written by David Micheline. Art by Mooney, Breeding & Yomtov

This issue concludes the tale, as many UK issues split their stories between two issues. Following is a few pages devoted to Mumm-Ra, almost like a montage of how he was introduced in the episodes Unholy Alliance and Berbils.

ThunderCats UK Star Comics Issue #3 Cover

Issued 4 March 1987
Written by David Micheline. Art by Mooney, Breeding & Yomtov

This is the first part of a reprint of the US Star comic #4 (below is a repost of that synopsis).
This issue takes up where issue #2 left off. Despite the fact that only Lion-O can see Jaga's spirit form, all the 'Cats rush off to see if they can find any clues as to what happened to him. While searching the jungle, 'Jaga' appears to Lion-O and tells him a temporary disturbance in the Astral Plane caused him to disappear before but that all was well now. Relived, Lion-O goes back to tell the others.
However, on their way back to the Lair, the ThunderCats fall into various traps and are taken captive by a mysterious stranger. When too much time passes, Lion-O signals the others with the Sword with no results. Worried, he bounds off to find his friends. Following an unfamiliar cat scent leads him to some ruins. When the sword sounds a warning, 'Jaga' appears again and tells Lion-O the same disturbance in the Astral Plane caused the judgment aura in the Eye and to ignore the warning. Believing him, Lion-O soldiers on only to walk right into the same stranger's trap.
The stranger, of course, is Lynxana, former ThunderCat turned bounty hunter. Lion-O breaks free and fights with Lynxana. When she mentions that she's glad old Jaga will witness Lion-O's fall, he realizes that it can't be the real Jaga, confirming this with the Sword's second sight powers. His cover blown, Mumm-Ra shows himself and fights. Meanwhile, Lynxana concludes that nobody should fall to something so evil as Mumm-Ra and actually helps Lion-O. With Mumm-Ra defeated, they form a truce in an effort to free the others and find Jaga.

Issued 11 April 1987

This issue contains the second half of the story, again as the UK books split the tale between two issues.

#5 TO PLUNDER CASTLE PLUNDARR PART 1

ThunderCats UK Star Comics Issue #5 Cover
Download the entire issue in pdf format. File size is 2.8MB.
Issued 18 April 1987
Written by David Micheline. Art by Mooney, Breeding & Scotese

Despite the declaration on the cover (as in there is a story called To the Victor, the Spoils), this issue is a reprint of the first part of the US Star comic #5 (View a repost of the synopsis below).

The summary is made possible by what I gathered from Axelle's Cats Corner website.

This issue is closely related to the story-line of the last one - Jaga is still missing and foul play thanks to Mumm-Ra is suspected. Lynxana, a spurned former noble turned bounty hunter, was introduced in issue 4 and continues to play a role here. Eventually, she forms a brief alliance with Lion-O, so appalled by Mumm-Ra's evil she cannot help but aid the ThunderCat in helping his friends. They have to first face the Mutants at Castle Plundarr and a super-powerful Mumm-Ra...

Download the entire issue in pdf format. File size is 2.6MB.
Issued 25 April 1987
Written by David Micheline. Art by Mooney, Scotese

This book covers the second half of the story from the previous issue. This one picks up where the ThunderCats plus Lynxana are trying to escape Castle Plundarr, and ends setting up the next issue, Mumm-Ra Times Three.

Issued 2 May 1987

Continuation of ongoing story from last issue, and reprint of US star comic #6.
After a quick recap, Lion-O says he smells a rat. The power of Sight beyond Sight shows him that Castle Plun-darr has not been destroyed, rather it was an illusion which the Sword dispels. The Mutants charge out to do battle and Mumm-ra appears, as gigantic as ever and claiming to be three times as powerful, thanks to Jaga's powers which he has stolen. After a show of Mumm-ra's new powers, Lion-O persuades Slithe to join forces with the Thundercats to defeat Mumm-ra. After some reluctance, Slithe agrees and everyone, including Lynxana, heads out to attack Mumm-ra's Pyramid and battle commences.
First inclusion of 'Thunder-Chat' - reader's letters answered by 'Snarf'

Written by David Micheline. Art by Mooney, DeMulder

This book contains the conclusion of the story from the previous issue. Both books are also reprints of a US Star issue #6, and it concludes the Lynxana story arc.

Download the entire issue in pdf format. File size is 2.4MB.
Issued 16 May 1987
Written by Simon Furman. Art by Yeowell, Baskerville
Special thanks to Spaced Angel for the cover scan and information on this issue.

Lion-O has nightmares of a creature that attacks his friends and he is unable to help them. He wakes from his dreams, shaken and tired, and unsure whether he should tell the other Thundercats. These events are watched by Mumm-ra, who goes to the Mutants and tells them of his plan to destroy the Thundercats. Dawn, the next day, Lion-O is still sleeping while the others fend off a Mutant assault on the Lair. Still in the grip of his dream, Lion-O hears their cries as they are overwhelmed and he wakes up to find that he is 10-years-old again.

#10 WAKING NIGHTMARE PART 2

ThunderCats UK Star Comics Issue #10 Cover
Download the entire issue in pdf format. File size is 2.4MB.
Issued 23 May 1987
Written by Simon Furman. Art by Yeowell, Baskerville, and Gilbert

This is part two of a story that began in the previous issue. In this installment, Lion-O awakes to find the nightmares he'd been having for the past week have come true. He's awaken to find himself reverted back to a 10 year old cub which means he's unable to even lift the Sword of Omens to help his friends, who are being visciously attacked by Mutants outside the Lair. When Jaga investigates, he's appalled to find Lion-O sitting on the floor of his bedroom sobbing. Of course, Jaga can see that Lion-O hasn't become a child at all. Apparently, Mumm-Ra caused the terrible dreams and now that Lion-O is sleep deprived and events seem to be mirroring the stuff of those nightmares, Lion-O only *thinks* he's a child. So, instead of undermining his confidence farther, Jaga encourages Lion-O to help his friends despite being 'small and weak'. His faith in himself renewed, Lion-O jumps into the fray in time to save his friends.

Download the entire issue in pdf format. File size is 2.5MB.
Issued 30 May 1987
Written by Ian Rimmer. Art by Griffiths, Hine & Place

This issue introduces the Berzerkers, who with the help of Slithe, devise a way to ambush and capture all the Thundercats. Now, Slithe has the Sword of Omens and the Berzerkers are free to take over Third Earth. However, Lion-O has a yet-to-be-seen trick up his sleeve in the form of a mysterious invention he brought along with him.
I also find it interesting that the comics set it so that Lion-O cannot just tap into the Sword's power whenever he feels like it - there's a refractory period of sorts at play here. Interesting!

Issued 6 June 1987
Written by Ian Rimmer. Art by Griffiths, Hine & Place

As this issue opens to tell the second part of this story, Snarf works his way aboard the ship carrying Lion-O's mysterious secret weapon. Meanwhile, it's revealed Slithe never was really a prisoner and it was all a ruse to draw and then capture all the ThunderCats. The Berzerkers wanted the Thundercats, as once captured, it would show all the other Berzerkers there's nothing to fear on Third Earth and an invasion would ensue. For the Mutants, they received the Sword of Omens for their part in helping capture the 'Cats.
Turns out, the "secret weapon" Snarf carried in his pack was the real Sword of Omens. Lion-O had brought a fake, and that was now what Slithe possessed. With the real sword in hand, Lion-O easily frees his friends. A battle ensues between the freed ThunderCats and Berzerkers and Mutants. Everything goes well until Hammerhand gets his mitts on Snarf. Hammerhand just wants free passage away from there and they can have Snarf back. Lion-O has an instinct they can trust the bargain, and leave the ship. Soon, Snarf is released in a row boat to come back to them, and the Berzerkers return to their world. Lion-O, hoping they'll tell all how the Thundercats successfully defended against the attack and thereby thwarting any chance of a large-scale Berzerker invasion!
