WB Summary:
As Lion-O and Pumyra try to evade Mumm-Ra and his forces in the mines of Mount Plundarr in an effort to keep the Sword of Plundarr out his hands, we flash back in time and discover its origin ... and its relationship with the Sword of Omens.
Purrsia's Synopsis:
As Mumm-Ra closes in on the ThunderCats at the mine, they try to decide what to do. Pumyra thinks following the path of the slaves is a terrible idea to escape - it'll just lead Mumm-Ra right to the slaves and get them slaughtered. She suggests they go back in the mine and lose the forces of Mumm-Ra there, as she knows the paths in there better than anyone. Panthro doesn't like the idea, but let's Lion-O decide and he goes with Pumyra's plan - he and she will go in the mine as a distraction. Panthro, Tygra and Cheetara are to get the Tank and meet up with them later.
Things don't go well when Mumm-Ra is able to summon the sword, the glowing, evil object basically giving the cats away at every turn. There's flashbacks to the time of Leo, Lion-O's ancestor (Re: Legacy) and it's shown the Sword was born under terrible circumstances. Mumm-Ra destroyed the Star of Plundarr as the first step in the Sword of Plundarr's creation, thereby wiping out 3 planets with life. Billions died. Panthera convinces Leo what Mumm-Ra is doing in the pursuit of power is wrong, and they hatch their plan to overthrow him by having their own, smaller sword forged from the same leftover star material used on the Sword of Plundarr then steal the war stone to put in it (Re: Legacy).
In the present day, Lion-O and Pumyra decide to separate - she taking the Sword of Plundarr and it's not long til Mumm-Ra has her captive and the Sword in his possession. Lion-O finds them, and the fight is on for both the Sword and Pumyra. In the end though, Lion-O cannot trade Pumyra's life for the Sword and rescues her, allowing Mumm-Ra to get the Sword of Plundarr and escape. Now the race is really on for the other stones, for if Mumm-Ra finds them first everything they've fought for up until now will be for nothing.
Quotes:
"You're like the toy that never breaks, I love it!" - Kaynar to Lion-O
"Never forget Leo, true power is not given but taken." - Mumm-Ra
"You're crazier than Kaynar." - Atticus to Lion-O
"Your ancestor thought he could beat me as well. I'm still here. Where's he?" - Mumm-Ra to Lion-O, whose response was 'you're looking at him!'
"Your emotions are what will make you a great king. A king I will follow anywhere." - Pumyra to Lion-O
"The balance has shifted. We're looking at a whole new war." - Lion-O
Facts of Note:
The Sword of Omens and Sword of Plun-Darr are essentially made from the same star material.
Classic Compare/Contrast:
Lion-O gave his classic battle cry in this ep, which we hadn't heard in a while. I do miss the cat signal going up though, an event seen few times in this series but such a staple of the old series. This ep did have an underlying lesson/theme which is very OS by nature. It was done well here, without getting too preachy which is nice.
Purrsia's Two Cents:
This episode had a nice balance of origin flashback story, and present day action. The over-all theme was whether to let emotion rule you, and if this is a bad thing. We saw examples of how it can lead to outcomes not entirely desired. However, being a focused hard-ass tends to leave dead people in its wake. And even though sometimes making that emotional decision landed Lion-O in a tough situation, he and his friends all lived to fight another day.
As for the Pumyra and Lion-O dynamic, she was back to blaming him for a lot of things this ep. But they had a touching scene at the end where they both realized things about the other. He saw that Pumyra had been through a lot and doesn't blame her for giving him crap. She saw he was willing to save her repeatedly despite the way she's treated him at times, and says she's follow him anywhere.
Kaynar was amusing as usual - always entertaining when he's on screen. Wondering what happened to Atticus though - did he plunge to his death or...?
Probably the biggest weak point of the episode was when Lion-O and Pumyra decided to separate in the mine...Lion-O doesn't even know the mine well enough to be on his own in there, and he gave the Sword of Plun-Darr to Pumyra to carry when he knows THAT'S what's attracting the bad guys? hmmm. Even so, this was one of the better eps of the recent crop :)
