86. Mumm-Rana's Belt

Not bad, but not fabulotastic neither...

Amok and Luna are venturing in the forest when they overhear laughing and decide to eavesdrop. The source of said laughter is the Thunderkittens as they enjoy a story-telling session with Snarf. Pumyra is also there. The next story on Snarf's roster is that of Queen Luna and her magical belt...Queen Luna, incidently, is Luna's grandmother. This tale piques the short n' stubby Lunie's interest.

Snarf relates a tale from the ancient days of Third Earth, about a tyrannical lady named Queen Luna who terrorized the people. Incidently, this Luna looks exactly like the stubby one except she's tall and can walk on her own. Thanks to a magic belt that bestowed this ancient Luna with her powers, she enslaved the Wolos and the Berbils and put them to work in underground Thundrillium mines. Finally, Mumm-Rana faces off against her, culminating in Luna's defeat and capture of the belt (btw, without the belt, Queen Luna shrank in stature until she looks identical to the Luna we know and hate). Mumm-Rana also exiles Queen Luna to the first moon of Plundarr.

Thanks to the tale, the present-day Luna knows where to find her grandmother's belt and sets off to reclaim it. Just as they take off, Lion-O and Panthro arrive and offer the group a ride. Everyone has something to do or somewhere to go but Pumyra who stays behind to get in some target practice. After everyone leaves, she hears the departing Lunies and investigates. Immediately Pumyra realizes where Luna must be headed and decides to try to stop her.

Realizing they're being followed, Luna and Amok try to lose Pumyra in the Desert of Lava Geysers to no avail, though she is slowed down by it. Meanwhile, the Lunatak duo arrive at the White Pyramid. They debilitate the good mummy by destroying one of the Pyramid's white obelisks. Luna easily removes the belt from the helpless Mumm-Rana once inside the Pyramid, and puts it on. When she does, she transforms into what her grandmother once was - a full sized threat to be reckoned with. Pumyra shows up too late and is the first to get a taste of Luna's new powers. She's taken care of by being sealed into a brick wall.

Luna makes the mistake of basically telling Amok he's of no use to her anymore, even going so far as putting him to work in the Thundrillium mines. This does not go over well with the big gallut, who wants only to go where Luna goes. For now he obeys, and Luna is off to enslave the people once again and otherwise wreak havoc. Her first stop is Castle Plundarr, where she enlists the involuntary help of Slithe and Monkian. She has them do the grunt work to set up a trap for the ThunderCats traveling in the ThunderTank.

Back at the White Pyramid, Amok is still there, sulking just as Pumyra is coming to and realizing she's trapped. Lucky for her, Amok throws a fit at the unfairness of being cast aside, and punches enough of a hole in the wall she's trapped behind, that she's able to bust it out the rest of the way and escape. However, with the Pyramid in a shambles, Mumm-Rana is powerless to help - so it's up to Pumyra!

As Pumyra sets off, Luna springs her trap on Lion-O and Panthro who are traveling in the mountains in the ThunderTank. After they're trapped between two piles of rock, she moves in to attack the pair. Luna is powerful and about to finish them off and gain the Sword when Pumyra arrives. She helps get the Sword to Lion-O so he can call the others.

Incredibly, the Sword fixes the White Pyramid so Mumm-Rana can come to the rescue. The two duke it out, Luna falls and in the process, loses her belt. She lies helpless on a ledge until Amok arrives with the belt. But instead of giving it back to Luna like she demands, he tosses it into the ravine. Amok then collects Luna but refuses to carry her away from the Thundercats above until she apologizes to him.

Canon Facts of Note:

According to Snarf's tale, Lunataks were present on Third Earth originally, until Mumm-Rana exiled Luna's ancestor to the first moon of Plundarr.

Fave Quote:

I love the scene in castle Plundarr where Slithe and Monkian's poker game is disturbed by knocking. It went something like this:

*knock knock*
Monkian: We're not home.
Slithe: There's nobody here, yessss.
*knock knock*
Both: Beat it!

leppardra: I love this story because it's Pumyra-centric and well animated (at least in the first half of the episode). And did you note in the next-to-last scene how Panthro places his hand on Pumyra's shoulder? And how she flicks her eyes in his direction as he does? He's attracted to her, no two ways about it! And Pumyra's feelings for him seem mutual! - - But, of course, Princess Luna, empowered by her granny's belt, gives Lion-O and the Sword of Omens one hell of a beating, with the blade being knocked out of his hand for the umpteenth time. And Pumyra shows up in the nick of time to grab and throw it back to him. But, hey, look at it this way. At least that darned Sword didn't break - this time!

leppardra: Sadly, this was the only Pumyra-centric tale in the series. I would have loved another one. And what's more annoying is that nobody on the writing staff even pondered the notion of a Bengali-centered story. They probably thought he was too inexperienced as a ThunderCat to merit his own tale. Baloney!
