Great Holy Jaga! This 'sode rawks!!

Lion-O has a dream about the destruction of Thundera when he was a young boy. In the dream, he sees three Thunderians: Lynx-O, the old and wise blind lynx, Bengali, the young white bengal tiger, and Pumyra, the young female puma. The three Thunderians run for the Thundercats flagship, but the ship had to take off before it was destroyed by an earthquake. The young boy Lion-O thinks that he’s seeing the death of the three Thunderians and wakes up from his dream.

Snarf is there when Lion-O awakes and Lion-O tells his friend that he “had that nightmare again”. Snarf goes to make breakfast to make Lion-O feel better when Jaga appears to him. Jaga tells Lion-O that the three Thunderians did not perish on Thundera and that they are actually on Third Earth. When Lion-O asks for more info, Jaga tells him that Cheetara can tell him more by using her sixth sense.

Lion-O then calls for a meeting in the council chamber and informs the others of what Jaga said. Cheetara then uses her sixth sense to look into the past. She sees Lynx-O, Bengali, and Pumyra on Thundera and they are rescued by a small Berbil ship with two Berbils on board just as Thundera explodes. However, the explosion damaged one of the ship’s fuel tanks and it barely makes it to Third Earth on a small desserted island. Cheetara comes out of her vision and can tell no more to the others.

Mumm-Ra sees this on the cauldron in the pyramid and plans to find and capture the Thunderians before the Thundercats find them. He then sends Ma-Mutt, his pet dog out to the ocean to look for the ship of Hammerhand and the Berzerkers (Ma-Mutt can fly, by the way). Ma-Mutt finds the Berzerkers and a hologram of Mumm-Ra tells them that he will pay them lots of gold for bringing the three Thunderians to him. They agree and Mumm-Ra gives them the location of the island that the Thunderians and Berbils are stranded on.

Meanwhile, back at Cats’ Lair, the Thundercats realize that they can’t get to the island in the Thundertank, because it doesn’t have the ability in it’s water mode. Panthro then reveals that he’s working on two new small flying vehicles: the Hovercat and Thunderclaw and that they’re almost finished. Until they’re operational, Lion-O sends the Thunderkittens out on their space boards to see if they can find a boat large enough for the ‘Cats to use for finding the missing Thunderians.

Meanwhile, the Berzerkers land on the desserted island in their ship and attack the makeshift stronghold that the Thunderians and Berbils have built on the island and are able to take them prisoner. Elsewhere, the Thunderkittens didn’t have any luck with trying to procure a boat for the Thundercats and then witness the Berzerker ship coming close to the beach that they’re at. They see the Thunderians in chains (the two Berbils are hidden elsewhere, off-screen) and race back to the Lair to tell the others. They arrive back at the Lair just as Panthro puts the finishing touches on the Hovercat and Thunderclaw and tell them that the Berzerkers have the Thunderians prisoner. Lion-O and Snarf go off alone to try and free the Thunderians.

Lion-O gets aboard the ship and fights the Berzerkers. Before Lion-O can have a one-on-one with Hammerhand, he orders Ram-Bam, Top-Spinner, and Cruncher to grab the prisoners. Lion-O fears that Hammerhand will harm the Thunderians unless he leaves, so he retreats back into the water, but not before promising the Thunderians that he’ll return for them. Hammerhand then orders Ram-Bam to launch fireballs into the water to make it boiling hot in an attempt to boil Lion-O alive. On the beach, Snarf sees what is going on and tries to jump in the water to help, but it’s too hot for him. The episode ends as things are getting really hot for the young lord.

Canon Facts of Note:

This ep marks many debuts, including that of Ma-Mutt, Bengali, Lynx-O, and Pumyra. Not to mention that of a few new 'toys' in the Thunderclaw and Hovercat.

leppardra: "ThunderCats, Ho!" is my favorite 5-parter; it's the main inspiration for my fan fiction. The scene where Lynx-O is blinded taught me how to introduce characters in a story. The new characters are also why I love this story; it's a joy realizing Lion-O and his group aren't the only Thunderians who survived Thundera's end. Larry Kenney again gives Lion-O natural speech with only a dash of ego. Seeing old foes again is another pleasure, and for some perverted reason I enjoy watching Lion-O land on his back for a grand total of six times.

leppardra: However, HammerHand, who was killed in "Terror of HammerHand" and stayed dead in "Spitting Image", is mysteriously alive again, and it's not told why. Why the ThunderTank doesn't have the range to go to the survivors' island is a mystery; one would think the Tank could go there. Lion-O could have used the Sword of Omens to make short work of the Berserkers, but it would have resulted in a very short 5-parter! HammerHand said, "It's the young lord himself" and "That's the end of the Lord of the ThunderCats" within earshot of all three Thunderians, so why didn't Pumyra and Bengali realize who Lion-O was at that moment? Surely, they must have known about Claudus and his son, like Lynx-O did.

slideyfoot: Personally, I was disappointed with this when I finally got my hands on the Series 2 Part 1 DVD set. The script is erratic (such as the aforementioned resurrection of previously very dead characters), the dialogue often painful, and even the animation seems to have declined in quality. Its nice to have new characters, but from watching the whole of the 5 parter, it felt much closer to the animated advertising style of He-Man than a refreshing new start. That sense increases as more vehicles and more characters start piling in during the course of this 5 parter and Mumm-Ra Lives. Having Mumm-Ra cuddle up to his new pet and tell him how much he's loved was especially irritating, but on the other hand it makes sense that with a new series, the writers and producers wanted to try something different.
