87. Hachiman's Honor

Not bad, but not fabulotastic neither...

On his way through snowy mountains to meet the Thundercats at the Tower of Omens, Hachiman rescues Luna whom he obviously doesn't recognize as a hostile force. She tricks him into helping her back to a cave he believes is her home. Once there, he's ambushed by the other Lunies (Chilla puts him on ice) and they take his sword, The Thundercutter.

Lion-O and the Thunderkittens are out looking for Hachiman, concerned that he may be caught in a bad storm during his journey. By luck, the Thunderkittens have a misadventure and crash land near the cave. Wishing for shelter from the cold wind, they go inside and find Hachiman frozen in ice. They use a flame pellet to free their friend. The Kittens want to go back and tell those at the Tower what happened, but Hachiman feels his honor was insulted and so insists on persuing the Lunataks by himself. Kat and Snarfer follow Hachiman, leaving Kit to find Lion-O.

The Lunies observe Hachiman and Kat on their way, but decide they'll be waiting for them in the Valley of Chains which they must pass through to get to Dark Side. There, they'll reveal the reason why they stole the Thundercutter. It seems they built a robotic samuri automaton that they think will be invinsible with Hachiman's sword. The trio soon arrive at the Valley and Snarfer explains how an ancient wizard cursed it and since then, no one has ever returned from the Valley. But Hachiman is undeterred. He figures if the Lunies passed through there, he can too. They soon find out why the Valley is named as such, when chains burst from the ground and grab them - all except Snarfer who tries to run back where they came from.

Meanwhile, Kit has flagged down Lion-O and as they walk through the same tunnel where Hachiman was first found frozen, Lion-O gets a warning from the Sword. He sees Hachiman and Kat in chains and rushes off to help. They arrive and before Snarfer can warn them, the chains grab Kit and Lion-O too, knocking the Sword out of Lion-O's hand. After some struggle, he calls to the Sword and breaks free. He soon frees the others, including Snarfer who was also eventually grabbed by the chains.

The chains defeated, Luna seizes the opportunity to unleash Automaton. Since the being is a robot that knows no difference between good and evil, the Thundercutter can only fight with the mechanical warrior. Lion-O sends out the insignia, but the Automaton slices it from the sky - and the duel is on! But Lion-O trips over a chain remnant and is about to be done in by the Automaton - until Hachiman intervenes. It looks like he is going to be run in by his own sword, but when he touches the blade with his hands, the Thundercutter recognizes the touch and destroys the robot.

The defeat causes discord at Sky Tomb, with Alluro suggesting a coup against Luna given how bad her schemes suck. The revolt is short lived, however, when Amok puts the other Lunies in their place. Afterward, she orders them to follow the 'Cats with Sky Tomb in hopes they can still finish the job. They see Sky Tomb approaching and Hachiman is eager to get even. But Lion-O suggests they go back into the cave rather than try to fight in the open.

As the Lunies approach, Hachiman and Lion-O use their swords to cause a cave-in that drives the Lunies back out of the cave the way they came in. And avalanche of snow and ice buries them anyway. In an amusing bit, Luna raves about wanting the Lunies to get back in the cave and get the Thundercats. Fed up, Alluro shuts her up by shoving her face down into the snow and walking away. Who hasn't wanted to do that to Luna and possibly worse? lol

In the closing scene, Snarfer causes a commotion by building his own automaton - to do his chores for him - that goes haywire and trashes a room at the Tower. Lynx-O and Lion-O have a good laugh at Snarfer's expense.

Canon Facts of Note:

We learn that the Thundercutter can distinguish between the good and evil intentions of the one that holds it.

Fave Quote:

"My, such a brave sword swinger. We'll have to do something about that." - Alluro, faking being at all impressed with Hachiman.
