Pretty damn good, but not quite purrfect.

At Mumm-Ra’s pyramid, Mumm-Ra tells Ma-Mutt that he wants to show him something in the cauldon. The dog looks in and sees a flashback to Thundera, long before the destruction of the planet, when Jaga was a young warrior and Lion-O was a baby. In the flashback, we see a Mutant warrior named Ratilla The Terrible (who we can assume is a relative of Ratar-O) break in ‘Cats Lair and retrieve a golden treasure chest known as the Treasure of Thundera. Ratilla exclaims that the chest contains the Thundercats’ every secret, and with the treasure, Ratilla can rule Thundera.

Suddenly, the double-blades of Ratilla’s sword, the Sword of Plun-Darr start to emit fire, which is its version of a warning call. Afterwards, the young Jaga bursts into the room and he and Ratilla engage in combat. Jaga is able to unarm Ratilla and freeze him with the help of the Sword of Omens, which Jaga owned at the time. Jaga then tells Ratilla that he will spend the rest of his days in exile and that he will never see the Sword of Plun-Darr again. With that, Jaga throws Ratilla’s sword into a chasm that is filled with lava and it sinks out of sight.

Flash forward to present-day Third Earth, where Mumm-Ra tells Ma-Mutt that even though the Sword of Plun-Darr was trapped in the molten core of Thundera, its power could not be subdued. Mumm-Ra then shows Ma-Mutt that it was indeed the Sword Of Plun-Darr that destroyed Thundera and caused the Thundercats to retreat from their home planet. Mumm-Ra then tells of his plan to travel through time and space, to sieze the Sword Of Plun-Darr and then to find the Treausure of Thundera. With that, Mumm-Ra and Ma-Mutt travel to a different part of the pyramid, where Mumm-Ra reveals his time machine. He and Ma-Mutt then step inside and the time machine disappears.

Meanwhile, at the Tower Of Omens, Lynx-O picks up one of his weird vibrations. When Lion-O asks what is wrong, Lynx-O says that he’s not sure, but somehow, the signals are coming from Thundera. Lion-O says that it is impossible, since Thundera is totally destroyed. Lynx-O then explains that from what he’s feeling, it’s as though parts of the planet are reforming. Lion-O then calls the rest of the Thundercats at the Lair and they all get together for a meeting. Panthro, Tygra, and Lynx-O use a space graph to explain what is happening. Turns out by now that the pieces of the dead planet have reformed to become about half the size of the original planet. Cheetara then insists that maybe there are still some survivors from the explosion of the planet and that they might need help. Panthro then says that it’s much worse than that, as he shows a picture of a pyramid that looks just like Mumm-Ra’s is on the reforming Thundera.

Pumyra then makes the suggestion that if Mumm-Ra’s at the remains of Thundera, then he can’t be on Third Earth. Lion-O and Panthro then decide to go to Mumm-Ra’s pyramid to find out if he really is gone while the others continue to monitor the activity on Thundera. When Lion-O and Panthro arrive inside the pyramid, the ASOE statues fall on them one-by-one as they hear Mumm-Ra’s voice taunting him. Once they are able to miss the ASOE statues, Panthro is taunted by an image of Mumm-Ra. Lion-O pleads with Panthro to not chase it, but Panthro goes anyway. Panthro follows the image of Mumm-Ra down a hall until it disappears. Panthro then falls down a hole in the floor while Lion-O looks on. Lion-O then goes down the same hole to rescue his friend. They both end up in a deep hole in the floor.

The image of Mumm-Ra appears again and welcomes the pair to their “watery grave”. With that, the Mumm-Ra image disappears again as the room fills up with water from a spout in the top of the room. Before the two can drown in the room, Lion-O uses the sword to call the others to help he and Panthro. They both then escape through the big water spout and somehow appear out of the cauldron just as the other Thundercats arrive. Panthro then appologizes to the others for getting himself and Lion-O into that mess by chasing after the Mumm-Ra hologram. They all then come to the conclusion that since Mumm-Ra left that trap for them, then he must be on Thundera. When Lion-O asks what Mumm-Ra could possibly want from their old home planet, Jaga appears before Lion-O to tell him that Mumm-Ra is after the Treasure of Thundera and that he must be stopped before he can destroy the Thundercats.

Back at the Tower Of Omens, Lion-O proposes a plan for a group of them to travel to Thundera via the Feliner to find out what Mumm-Ra is after. However, since the Feliner is incapable of making that type of trip, they will need to install special boosters on the vehicle. After that, the ‘Cats are shown another image of Thundera. This time, it’s of the resurrected Vally Of Snarves. All of the Snarves are captured and are being forced to look for the Treasure Of Thundera while Ma-Mutt supervistes. Snarf and Snarfer rightfully get upset over their people being abused, but Lion-O assures them that it will stop once they get to Thundera. Most of the ‘Cats then leave for the Lair to get started while Lynx-O and the Thunderkittens are left at the Tower Of Omens. Vultureman and Jackalman watch them leave and decide that now is the perfect time to take over the Tower Of Omens. However, Vultureman decides to rebel against the Mutants and give the info to the Lunatacs instead, since “Mutant-kind” has never done anything for him (like the Lunatacs have either).

Anyway, despite Jackalman’s protest, Vultureman heads for Sky Tomb in Dark Side and delivers the info about the almost-empty Tower to Luna and her crew. Luna decides that since it’s just Lynx-O and the Thunderkittens guarding the Tower, that Red Eye and Tug Mug will be enough to take over. So the Lunatac pair go to the Tower and attack the old blind man and the two kids and manage to get the win without too much trouble. While this is going on, Lion-O gets the signal from the sword and sees the assault on the Tower by Red Eye and Tug Mug. Lion-O then leaves the Lair with Pumyra, Cheetara, and Snarf in the Thundertank to rescue their friends while Panthro, Tygra, Bengali, and Snarfer continue their work on the Feliner.

Canon Facts of Note:

Many a juicy tidbit lies in this episode:
  • The concept of Thundera reforming which paves the way for the later adventures on "New Thundera"
  • The intriguing back-history of Jaga and his fateful toss of the Sword of Plundarr into Thundera's core.
  • Speaking of the Sword, this episode introduces the wicked Sword of Plundarr and apparently its original weilder, Ratilla.
  • We get to see new parts of the Black Pyramid and the funky time travel building it housed.
  • Now Mumm-Ra has two magical abodes - one on Third Earth, one on Thundera.
  • Of course, we are intruduced into the Treasure of Thundera, pieces of which will become the focal point of many episodes from here on out.

    Purrsia's Two Cents:

Lotsa interesting revelations in here...the only down side is more snarves and the idea that Thundera spontaneously is reforming as not only a livable planet, but with a lot of stuff that used to be on it still intact. When Cheetara wondered if there were survivors it made me groan - how soon we forget the utter fireball of destruction featured in Exodus...if someone survived that, push Lion-O aside and give that guy the Sword - obviously, he's a resilient powerhouse to be reckoned with!

leppardra: Peter Lawrence is to be thanked for injecting new blood into the ThunderCat saga. This 5-parter is an enjoyable one. Frankly, fireball destruction of that world aside, I like the idea of Old Thundera reforming to become New Thundera. You have to wonder, though, how Jaga, fleeing from the destruction and later observing it from the bridge of the ThunderCats' royal flagship, felt knowing that, by throwing the Sword of Plun-Darr into the chasm of molten lava, he was the actual cause of his native planet's extinction. He must have felt like the worst murderer in the universe!

leppardra: But there are things in this installment to enjoy. The battle sequence between Jaga and Ratillo is great! This episode is the first time we see Mumm-Ra's space vehicle, which later dubbed the Mumm-Raft. The part where Lion-O and Panthro chase Mumm-Ra's hologram, nearly drown, and then escape is quite good. As is Panthro's apology to the others and Lion-O's "Hey, forget it, Panthro old buddy." Pay close attention to the very next scene: Lion-O takes the remorseful Panthro's hands in his in a gesture of support and forgiveness. But, of course, this is seen at a distance. Mustn't give the little ones the wrong impression, huh?
