97. Chain of Loyalty

Not bad, but not fabulotastic neither...

Tygra is becoming frustrated with efforts to decipher the Book of Omens. Until they find a page with pictures - ah, the simpleton's friend! Seriously, this images is of some kind of charm necklace, each "charm" depicting the face of a Thundercat. Just as they're gathering around to get a look at the page, Snarf comes in announcing he has candy fruit pie. The others forget about the perty pictures in favor of scarfing pie - all but Lion-O. He wants to figure it all out.

Cue Jaga, who explains it all. That bauble is the Chain of Loyalty, the most sacred of the Thundercats' treasures. He explains that if the delicate chain is ever broken, the Thundercats will begin to fight among themselves. He tells Lion-O to go to New Thundera and retrieve it before it can fall into the wrong hands.
Leaving Bengali and Snarf behind at the Lair, Lion-O and most of the original T-cats head off to Thundera - though Cheetara wonders why the Chain is so important now given they've gotten by this long without it.

Their departure does not escape Mumm-Ra, who naturally assumes they're going off to Thundera to find more of the Treasure. He departs as well, intent on stopping them. When he arrives, he runs into one of the snarves there, Eggbert, and uses his guise to trick the Thundercats. As planned, the 'Cats enlist Eggbert's help in finding the chain, not realizing he's really Mumm-Ra.
The 'cats split up, too. Panthro goes to search the Caverns of Cold, Cheetara and Tygra go to the forests of darkness, and the Kittens go with Lion-O to the Mountains of the Moon. Eggbert is told to join Lion-O's crew after he consults with the other snarves (given they'd been involved in construction and escavating on Thundera, I guess it made sense to see if any of the critters had spotted the chain). It is Lion-O's group that finds the trinket high in the Mountains, and Eggbert who grabs it first
He reveals then that he is Mumm-Ra, gloating all the while how this dooms the 'Cats. Not that Mumm-Ra has to do anything. Lion-O seems to have forgotten Jaga's warning about the delicate item - and ignores Kit's pleas of the same - and fires on Mumm-Ra with the Sword. The chain is hit as well and falls apart.

The result? The Thundercats turn greedy, selfish and against one another. Kit and Kat start fighting over the pieces of the chain. They also refuse to obey Lion-O. The Sword signals danger, and in the Eye Lion-O sees Cheetara and Tygra fighting each other. It all seems quite hopeless.

Back at Mumm-Ra's pyramid (the one on New Thundera, of course), the real Eggbert is trying to free himself. To get past Ma-Mutt, he disguises his voice to sound like Mumm-Ra's to get the hound to leave so he can escape. It works!
Meanwhile, Lion-O has bound the Kittens so they can't hurt him or themselves, and takes the pieces of the Chain in the hopes of repairing it somehow. Then he's off to try to round up the other 'Cats. After going through a great deal to get Cheetara and Tygra subdued, he has to deal with Panthro.
Panthro almost finishes Lion-O, but Eggbert arrives in time to save his bacon. Lion-O calls on the Sword's power, but not even that makes the Thundercats come around. Of course, the Sword then magically mends the Chain and all is well.

At the end, Mumm-Ra bemoans another failure and can't figure out what the heck happened to his dog or Eggbert.

Fave Quotes:

"You may laugh now, Thunderkittens. But soon I'll make you laugh on the other side of your faces." - Mumm-Ra's evil thoughts when disguised as Eggbert, as the kittens were laughing at his expense.

"Thanks to your stupidity, I have the Chain of Loyalty. And that spells the end of the ThunderCats!" - Mumm-Ra, gloating.

"Oh, take a hike, Lion-O. Back off!" - WilyKit to Lion-O, once the Chain of Loyalty was broken.

"I have no friends. I hunt alone." - Panthro

"It'll take more than puny Sword tricks to take me, Lion-O!" - Panthro, unimpressed with the Thundercats emblem blazing in the sky.

Canon Facts of Note:

Anyone else find it interesting that here Lion-O could use the Sword against another Thundercat, but in "All That Glitters", accidently doing so had horrid consequences? Yeah. Good old research and canon consistancy for ya ;)

Snarfs are brought up to work with Thundercats and help them in whatever way they can. That's fancy talk for SLAVES, bwahahaha!!

Cougar: Technically speaking, Lion-O did not use the Sword of Omens on Tygra and Cheetara. If you look closely, you will see that Lion-O used the Sword against the bolo whip and bo-staff, respectively. Hence, the curse of Balthas was not brought down upon the ThunderCats.
