Bill Ratter Reviewed by: Purrsia ![]() Mumm-Ra is roused from his rest to find a grotesque octapoid like creature named Amortus lurking in his cauldron. Amortus begs to be set free from the Land of No Return - a place the Thunderians banished him to long ago when he got too ambitious and tried to fight too much good at once. Mumm-Ra is loathe to set him free, as he'd done it once before and Amortus turned treacherous. Amortus promises to do his bidding and begs for freedom, but Mumm-ra has some terms. First, Amortus must prove himself by destroying Lynx-O, as Mumm-Ra figures Lion-O will be vulnerable without the wisdom of the blind Thundercat. Lynx-O is out flying around in the ThunderStrike when a storm crops up out of nowhere. It shorts out his braille board and the Strike's engines die, so he's truly flying blind now. He gets sucked into a whirlwind and crashes into a crater below. The Thundercats at the Lair notice he's dropped off radar and Lion-O gets a head's up from the Sword, so he, Cheetara and the Kittens take the Feliner to rescue him. But before they get there, Amortus appears to Lynx-O and curses him with his "touch", the tentacle leaving a mark on the lynx's face. Amortus warns Lynx-O that if he returns to the Lair, he'll endanger his friends. He's been marked and he can never go home. When Lion-O arrives, he tries to get Lynx-O to come with him but Lynx-O - dazed and confused by the "dream" about Amortus - refuses to budge. Lion-O emerges from the wreck of the Strike baffled, so Cheetara offers to see if she can get through to Lynx-O. She communicates with him telepathically, convincing him to return with them. They haul the Strike back to the Lair for repairs, and Lynx-O goes along, but he's very quiet and distant. He goes off to his room and the others think that he'll be okay with some rest. Snarf is less sure and stands watch outside his door. Sure enough, Amortus speaks to Lynx-O again and reiterates the threat against the others if he does not leave the Lair. So, Lynx-O packs a bag and heads off in the repaired ThunderStrike. All the while, Snarf was taking note of his movements and runs off to tell Lion-O. Now Lion-O, Cheetara, and Panthro pursue Lynx-O into the night. To make matters worse, Cheetara's sixth sense picks up visions of Lynx-O lost in a strange land which adds to the urgency of the situation. Lynx-O and the Strike pass through some sort of barrier in the sky and disappear, and the Thundercats follow much to Amortus' delight. He hopes to not only get Lynx-O as Mumm-Ra commanded, but he hopes the other Cats will be trapped in the land of no return as well. For Mumm-Ra's part, he begins to worry Amortus is once again getting too ambitious. Lynx-O guides the Strike into a cavern in the strange land, while the others barely make it inside behind him before the teeth-like gate on the cavern closes. When Lynx-O lands, Amortus appears again and lays tentacle to the old man's face. This time, it leaves more than a mark. A substance spreads from the point of contact. Eventually, Amortus explains, Lynx-O will become a stone statue as the substance spreads over his entire body. Amortus also points out the statues dotting the cavern, many of them feral looking Thunderians from long ago who met the same fate. Amortus disappears before the others land, but before Lynx-O can explain why he's turning to stone, Amortus appears again to "welcome" the Thundercats. The Thundercats attack but find their weapons easily captured by Amortus - even the Sword of Omens. Lion-O looks around and notices the Thunderian cat statues and seems truly astonished. He vows to make Amortus pay for his deeds. Amortus finds this amusing and suggests that maybe the Thundercats would like their weapons back. He sends their weapons whipping back at them, and though they put up a good fight, Amortus' power is too great and they're all knocked clear from a blast or charge the blubbery creature emitted. Then, Amortus marks Cheetara with his cursed touch before moving on to Panthro, and finally, Lion-O. But, Lion-O gets an idea before he's turned totally to stone. He calls the Sword to his hand and calls forth the signal. Not only does the Sword's magic break the spell for the Thundercats, but it also brings to life the statues of the ancient Thunderians. Though they're mere animated stone, this works in their favor for Amortus's touch can't harm them. They zap Amortus with beams from their eyes and not only does Amortus disappear but so does the Land of No Return. The Thundercats find themselves standing amid scenic landscape on New Thundera. The closing scene has Amortus back in Mumm-Ra's cauldron begging for help. But since Amortus didn't do as told regarding Lynx-O, Mumm-Ra instead banishes him to the Netherworld for all eternity. Back at the Lair, the Thundercats brief Snarf on what happened and Lynx-O notes that his adventure didn't prove all bad - it resulted in the removal of one more evil place in the universe. I did like the bit of Thunderian history revealed with the feral cats and all, as well as seeing Cheetara's telepathy powers in action...but Amortus is a really, really super annoying character, so that brought the value of this ep down quite a bit. "Your turn, my strange blue friend." - Amortus to Panthro. Cheetara can communicate on a telepathic level, at least with Lynx-O. comment system disabled temporarily thanks to spam happy assholes!
